New Volvo XC90 Sport Revealed
July 18, 2006 on 3:02 am | In SUVs | No Comments
In response to customer demand, Volvo Car Corporation is expanding the XC90 range with a new variant – the Volvo XC90 Sport. With a dynamic chassis setting and a unique appearance and specifications, the Volvo XC90 Sport will offer drivers more enjoyable handling and desirability.
“We have had numerous requests for a sportier XC90,” says Karin Falk, head of Special Vehicles at Volvo Cars. “They are from customers who appreciate the versatility and comfort of an SUV but who also want a bit more driving pleasure. We have developed the Volvo XC90 Sport especially for them, with a dynamic sport chassis, stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers, a sport-tuned, speed-dependent steering system, and larger, 19″ wheels,” she continues.
The Volvo XC90 Sport is not only sporty in aesthetic terms. The chassis characteristics have been refined to increase genuine driving pleasure. Both the shock absorbers and the anti-roll bars have been made stiffer to offer a high level of stability when cornering. The steering has also been adapted to offer quick steering response. Furthermore, Volvo’s self-levelling system, Nivomat, is standard in both the five and seven seat models. The system has been fine-tuned to offer great stability and driving control.

“We dare to promise a truly enjoyable experience behind the wheel of a Volvo XC90 Sport,” says Karin Falk. “The driving characteristics are of a calibre that few thought were possible in a Volvo SUV. And we have not had to compromise on riding comfort. We have succeeded in finding a balance between driving stability and the capacity to absorb unevenness in the road.”
The Volvo XC90 Sport will be launched with a colour that is unique for this XC90 variant, Passion Red, plus double chromed exhaust pipes and larger 19″ alloy wheels – available in silver bright or diamond cut with contrasting effect. Wheel arch extenders in the body’s colour help emphasise the large wheels particularly clearly.
Details and trim will have a satin silver finish rather than the standard chrome, and the lower skid plate is also in satin silver. The unique sill mouldings are in brushed stainless steel. To accentuate the car’s sporty nature and create a sleeker appearance, it is not fitted with roof rails – although they will be available as an option for those customers who need them.

The interior design is customised with a more sporty character with a sport steering wheel and gear selector of perforated leather plus sports seats with additional lateral cushioning to support the driver, even in faster cornering.
The leather in the seats is a combination of two different grades of leather which provide a sporty, exclusive feel. The décor piping in different colour shades also enhances the impression.

The instrument dials have metal chronograph watch-style faces with a shimmering blue lustre. The sport carpets with crème-coloured décor piping complete the picture of a sporty interior with an exciting hi-tech feel.
The range of engines for the Volvo XC90 Sport includes Volvo’s V8 (315 hp) and its new 3.2-litre six-cylinder petrol engines, plus the latest generation D5 (185 hp) turbodiesel. All three are very powerful and energy-efficient engines that contribute to the sporty driving experience. The engines are extremely compact and are transversely mounted in the engine bay for the best possible safety and a spacious cabin.
2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 Edition
July 17, 2006 on 3:11 am | In Sports Cars | No Comments
The new model variant SLR “722 Edition” is a homage by Mercedes-Benz to the unforgettable victory won by the British racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722 (indicating a start time of 7.22 a.m.) at the Mille Miglia in 1955. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp and a corresponding performance, the new super sports car, which went on sale July 11, 2006, will not only make the hearts of car enthusiasts beat faster.

The supercharged 5.5-litre V8 engine in the “722 Edition”, which is hand-built in the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach, generates 478 kW/650 hp. The particular strengths of this high-performance engine are immediate response to movements of the accelerator, highly emphatic torque build-up and an unmistakable V8 sound. The performance figures are outstanding even for a high-end sports car: the “722 Edition” accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in only 3.6 seconds, and 200 km/h is reached in just 10.2 seconds. The maximum speed (337 km/h) is above the 334 km/h previously achieved by the SLR.

Handling characteristics worthy of the racetrack are also provided by the sophisticated suspension, with 19-inch light-alloy wheels, a stiffer damper configuration and a ten-millimetre-lower body. Larger brake discs with a diameter of 390 mm ensure excellent braking performance.

Discreet visual modifications mark the SLR “722 Edition” out as special, in line with the wishes of the enthusiastic gentleman drivers and wealthy sports car collectors who make up the core target group. The modified front spoiler with an air splitter, as well as the rear diffuser, improve both the aerodynamics and contact pressure at high speeds, and reflect the transfer of cutting-edge technology from motor racing.
At the same time, the use of clear-lacquered carbon as an extremely strong yet lightweight material symbolises the practicality of these technical features. Bucket-type sports seats upholstered in leather/Alcantara provide outstanding lateral support, while the grippier racing steering wheel with a hunting-leather lining, gearshift paddles and black carbon highlights lend a thoroughbred racing touch to the interior.

July 14, 2006 on 2:38 am | In Sports Cars | No Comments
Abt Sportline is known for creating cars that cause a stir among car enthusiasts. Now the Bavarians are going one step further and have presented the Abt Sportsline GTI VS4-R with 270 HP.
The most powerful GTI from Kempten is a true sports car following the original’s tradition. This is also communicated by the abbreviation »R« that stands for Racing. So therefore it does not come as a surprise that the optical features of the latest GTI model of the Volkswagen specialists express pure motor sport feeling. The aerodynamic kit of the Bavarians tuners comprises a vigorous front spoiler lip, a weight-optimized carbon lip, broad side skirts, a low rear skirt and a marked rear spoiler. The rear muffler with four chrome end pipes does not only highlight the rear but also gives the GTI VS4-R an exciting motor sport sound.

The performance data shows its close relation with motor sport. Below the muscular body of the Abt GTI VS4-R explosive 270 HP and 350 Newtonmetre are waiting to be freed. These dates mean a power boost of 40 HP and 40 Nm compared with Abt’s predecessor. The engineers at Abt Sportsline gained this increase in power for the 2.0 FSI engine by modifying the motor management as well as by developing a new Abt turbocharger. So therefore the top speed of 244 km/h and the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds are no surprise. Abt Sportsline’s Golf GTI VS4-R is fully qualified for bearing its identification »R« standing for Racing.

Besides its optical features and the powerful performance, special Abt sport suspension springs guarantee sporting driving pleasure. With increasing speed the sport springs show tighter spring characteristics and keep the vehicle firmly on the asphalt. Tight corners and sudden shifts in direction cause danger of addiction. Modifications on the body as well as lowering the vehicle by as much as 40 mm contribute to the extremely sporty looks of the Abt GTI VS4-R.
Abt Sportsline’s light alloy wheel SP1 which has been awarded by trade journals several times and the new diamond-machined aluminium wheel AR guarantee optimal roadholding. Both wheels in the classical five-spoke design are equipped with SP SportMaxx tyres of technology partner Dunlop in the dimension 225/35 R19.

The design is also continued in the interior of the current Abt Sportsline Golf GTI VS4-R. The steering wheel, aluminium gear shift knob and floor mats bear the characteristic Abt logo and communicate motor sport feeling.
The new GTI VS4-R by Abt Sportsline with 270 HP is the most powerful GTI model from Kempten and rightly carries the »R«. This power-boosted version definitely is a real race GTI.
